Trail Run – Mesa Trail 05/14/16

It was a perfect day for running. Temps in the 40’s, foggy, and overcast. I decided to run on the Mesa Trail starting from the South Mesa TH. The Mesa Trail runs 6.7 miles along Boulder’s Flatirons and foothills, connecting Chautauqua Park (north) with Eldorado Canyon Road (south).

The starting elevation at South Mesa TH is 5,645 feet. The elevation at Chautauqua Park is 5,710, though I did not run all the way to Chautauqua. I ran just over half way and turned around, probably about 7.5 miles total and it took me 2 hours to complete. The trail started out with lots of climbing on mostly groomed dirt with rutted out sections.

Once the trail entered the trees, the trail became more technical with rocks and roots everywhere. Watching your footing became essential. Sections of the trail were pretty muddy since it is spring and the snow melt was in full effect.

This was a nice trail for my ability. Doable yet still challenging. I’d like to drop my bike off at one end someday and run the course in it’s entirety.

Start-End Elevation:     5,710′ – 5,645′ (6,465′ max elevation)

Elevation Change:     -65′ net elevation loss (+3,250′ total roundtrip elevation gain)

Skill Level:     Moderate-Strenuous
